Larch Class News

15th October 2018

Our first topic this year is ‘Knights and Princesses’ where we have been learning all about castles. We have found out about castles in Northumberland, which is where we live! We even have our very own castle in our classroom and have enjoyed dressing up as knights and princesses.

In English we have been reading the story of Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants where a mean giant stole the King’s golden underpants and a brave knight came to the rescue - he was only six years old! We learned lots of new words and what they mean. We also talked about what we liked and disliked about the story. We also compared giants from different stories. We are now reading and performing poems about dragons. We have also been doing a lot of independent learning practising our reading and writing.

In maths we have been practising our counting skills. We have taken part in lots of practical activities and games to help us. We can now work out one more and one less and can compare objects and numbers.

In science we have been learning all about materials and the objects made from them. We can describe materials and think about their properties. We also had a fun outdoor lesson where we worked in teams to build a house; we had to decide which material would be most suitable. We thought lego was best as it was strong and waterproof but found that a fabric house would be too wobbly!

This half term we have a special PE less each week taught by the Newcastle United Foundation. So far we have been learning the skills to improve our throwing, catching and jumping. In art we have been using pastels, painting and weaving.
